Development of fluorescent organic molecules for application in super-resolution imaging techniques

About the Project

We are looking for a highly motivated,passionate and competitive candidate for a fully-funded PhD position in fluorescent sensing and chemical biology.The successful candidate will join an international team working in the areas of high interest for chemical sensors and super-resolution imaging.This position is based at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences(MIPS)(Monash University,Parkville campus).

About this position:

This position forms part of Dr Kaur’s research program funded by the Australian Research Council.The PhD student will work towards the development of chemical sensors for applications in a range of super-resolution imaging methods.

Super-resolution imaging is the exciting new technology that provides a nanoscale picture of cellular targets and events,but the scope and application of this technology has been hampered by scarcity and poor quality of fluorescent tools compatible with it.In this PhD program,we will synthesise small organic fluorescent sensors for super-resolution imaging that will enable imaging of diverse of biomedical targets including,functional and toxic protein assemblies,and biological membranes.The developed sensors will afford imaging biomolecules at unparalleled resolution and expand our understanding of their role in health and disease.These sensors will also form the basis of precision medicine approaches where the nano-scale information is used to inform therapeutic regimens.The design rationale of these sensors will inspire the development of super-resolution imaging tools for the nano-scale visualisation of a myriad of biological events.Chemical sensors are routinely purchased by bioscience laboratories,reflecting the high commercial impact of this PhD program.

The successful applicant will be enrolled at Monash University and spend majority of the time at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences(MIPS)under the supervision of Dr Amandeep Kaur,Lecturer(Assistant Professor)and ARC DECRA Fellow,Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The candidate’s attributes:

Applications are invited from outstanding and enthusiastic graduates with a relevant background in synthetic organic chemistry or medicinal chemistry

The position is open to domestic and international students.

We are looking for students of high scholarly calibre with:

A First Class Honours degree,Masters degree or equivalent

Experience in synthetic organic chemistry

Analytical thinking,data analysis and critical problem-solving skills

Excellent time management skills and ability to work independently

Applicants with publications will be highly regarded

Fluency in written and oral English
